Let Evening Come ... By Jane Kenyon

Let the light of late afternoon
shine through chinks in the barn,
moving up the bales as the sun moves down.

Let the cricket take up chafing
as a woman takes up her needles
and her yarn. Let evening come.

Let dew collect on the hoe abandoned
in long grass. Let the stars appear
and the moon disclose her silver horn.

Let the fox go back to its sandy den.
Let the wind die down.
Let the shed go black inside.

Let evening come.

To the bottle in the ditch,
to the scoopin the oats,
to air in the lung let evening come.

Let it come, as it will,
and don't be afraid.
God does not leave us
comfortless, so let evening come.
 

 

저녁이 오게 하라 ... 제인 케년 詩

늦은 오후 햇살이
헛간 틈새로 비쳐들게 하고,
해가 기울면 짐더미로 오르게 하라.

귀뚜라미가 울도록 그냥 두어라.
여인네가 뜨개바늘과 털실을
집어들 즈음, 저녁이 오게 하라.

이슬이 긴 잡초 새에 버려진
괭이 위에 맺히게 하라. 별들이 뜨고
달이 그 은빛 뿔을 드러내게 하라.

여우가 제 모래굴로 돌아가게 하라.
바람이 잦게 두어라. 헛간 안이
어두워지게, 저녁이 오게 두어라.

개울의 깡통에, 귀리죽의
국자에, 허파의 바람에
저녁이 오게 하라.

오고 싶은 대로 오게 하라.
그리고 두려워 말라.
신은 우리를 위로하지 않은 채
버려 두지 않는다.
그러니 저녁이 오게 하라.
